For the fourth consecutive day, high winds have plagued the county and are testing the roofs and trees that braved the 100 mph winds of Thursday. The prevailing high winds kept county firefighters busy this weekend battling numerous woods and brush fires.Firefighters from Braddock Heights and Middletown Fire Companies fought a mountain fire off U.S. 40 approximately one and one half miles west of the Dan-Dee Motel Sunday for more than four hours. The high winds, clocked at 40 mph Sunday afternoon atop Gambrill Mountain, spread the fire and hampered firemen.
Yes, I remember this day very well, Jim Main, yes later Lt. Jim Main, were working day work. Early morning raining so hard you couldn't see across Montevue Lane, by 1PM was a Class 5 day with winds maxing out at 100+ miles an hour. Main dispatch site on Gambrill went down, so operated off local base station, outlying companies had to man base station as we could not copy mobile units. Major fire at Ernest Texaco on Jefferson St. major brush fire Rt 15 and O'possumtown Pike but couldn't get units off the road because of earlier heavy rain, several building collapse, South Street Frederick and building in Brunswick. Probably well over a hundred hot wire calls. Major PI on I-70 damaged door of MC A149 when wind grabbed the door and blew it, springing the hinge. John Knipple and Hiley Orndorff came in to help.
