On June 2, 1903, Junior Fire Company No. 2 of Frederick put two gray horses, Dan and Billy, into service to pull the Firehouse Steamer. During the company’s Horse Era, which lasted from 1903 to 1913, it owned at least five horses. The other named horses were Frank, Prince, and John. Two of those horses are seen in this photo. The paid driver is William B. Davis, known as “Uncle Billy.” His death in the line of duty on March 20, 1910, helped lead to major changes for Junior Fire Company in March 1911.
