Get ready to "fall back" Daylight Saving Time Ends - November 3rd

September 25, 2024

As it's starting to get colder, it's that time of the year for daylight saving time again. Daylight Saving Time ends, November 3, 2024, and is quickly approaching, and it's that confusing time of year again when everyone scrambles to remember they have to turn their clocks forward or backward.

Clocks fall back one hour on Sunday, November 3rd, meaning it's that time when, for one magical night — this year, a Saturday, we will be cushioned by an extra hour of sleep. When local daylight time is about to reach Sunday, November 5, 2023, 2:00:00 AM clocks are turned backward 1 hour to Sunday, November 3, 2024, 1:00:00 AM local standard time instead. Sunrise and sunset will be about 1 hour earlier on Nov 5, 2023 than the day before. It also means we will have sunnier morning commutes and darker evening commutes.

In addition to “falling back one hour”, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends testing your smoke alarms.
NFPA provides the following guidelines around smoke alarms:
• Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button.
• Make sure everyone in the home understands the sound of the smoke alarm and knows how to respond.
• Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
• Replace the smoke alarm immediately if it doesn’t respond properly when tested.
• Smoke alarms with nonreplaceable (long-life) batteries are designed to remain effective for up to 10 years.
If the alarm chirps, a warning that the battery is low, replace the entire smoke alarm right away.
• For smoke alarms with any other type of battery, replace batteries at least once a year. If the alarm chirps, replace only the battery.
