The Annual Public Safety Awards honor the Law Enforcement, Fire & Rescue and Emergency Service professionals protecting Frederick County. Each year the Chamber of Commerce celebrate Frederick County’s bravest men and women, those who place service before self. These local heroes make sacrifices that keep our businesses, homes and our families safe.

On April 9, 2019 Frederick County Fire and Rescue employees and volunteers were honored at the annual awards program held at the Brunswick Volunteer Fire Company social hall. Frederick County volunteers Jeffrey (Jeff) Scire and Alexander (Alex) McKenna received recognition for their dedication to the community as first responders.

Jeffrey Scire (Jeff) is a member of Independent Hose Company (Co. #1) in Frederick City. Jeff was presented the Gold Medal of Valor.

On October 22, 2018 a box alarm was dispatched to Indian Spring Road for a reported house fire. As units were responding, updates were being received from the Emergency Communication Center stating there was an adult male with mobility problems trapped with reported fire in the basement. Jeff was at home fixing dinner for his family when the call was dispatched. The house was nearby. Jeff quickly grabbed the victim and carried the victim up the stairs to get out of the house with flames and smoke creating zero visibility. Jeff was met by fellow EMS & rescue personnel who aided them due to the smoke inhalation both received. The victim received first, second and third degree burns. The victim is alive today due to Jeff’s selfless act of bravery. Jeff truly was instrumental in saving a life that day. Although Jeff stated he was “doing his job”, everyone involved truly believed he exhibited the characteristics of what defines a hero!

Alexander (Alex) McKenna is a member of Vigilant Hose Company (#6) in Emmitsburg. Alex was presented the Volunteer Firefighter of the Year award.

Alex made exceptional contributions to the Vigilant Hose Company and the area served by the department. Alex was very instrumental in pre-planning major target hazards within the local community. He led a very large task of creating an emergency plan for all buildings located on the Mount Saint Mary’s University campus. Once the hard copy was finalized, the electronic version was provided to the Operational Chief to have uploaded onto the data terminals in each piece of apparatus. Due to this reason, the information is accessible by mutual aid partners in the event of an incident.

Frederick County Fire and Rescue is honored to recognize our volunteers Jeff Scire and Alex McKenna. Congratulations to the both of you!
