A longtime Frederick resident still struggles to find the right words to express his gratitude to the EMS crew who saved his life last year at The Great Frederick Fair.

“I fell in the right place. I went down in front of Hemp’s which is in view of the EMS tent. They got there really quickly,” Joe Dutrow said. “Of course, I don’t remember any of it.”

Dutrow suffered a pulmonary embolism and was in cardiac arrest when EMTs from United Steam-Fire Engine Co. arrived.

Capt. Rob Lamoureux, who was part of the crew that night, agrees with Dutrow. “He collapsed 20 feet away from people who had the right training and the right equipment.”

The EMTs quickly initiated CPR and used an AED. He was shocked once at the scene and again in the back of the ambulance.

The next day he was flown to Suburban Hospital. “I was given a 50/50 chance. But, thanks to all of them, I made it…”

Lamoureux said he and the others were beyond delighted to hear of Dutrow’s recovery.

Since the incident, Dutrow is back to enjoying life that includes playing golf and bowling. And, he and his family have a special place in their hearts for the folks at United Fire Co.

They were surprise guests at the annual banquet where Dutrow shook hands and hugged every provider who helped save his life.

Lamoureux said they had no idea he was coming. “It was great. It was a good feeling to realize we made a difference..."

Dutrow sings the praises of his rescuers every chance he gets. “I’m fortunate they were there. Everything was on my side that night. They have great training, and I’m glad I was a recipient of it. If not, I certainly wouldn't be talking to you,” he said with a laugh.

Any EMTs available to staff the EMS tent at The Great Frederick Fair Sept. 14-22 should contact United Deputy Chief Jerry Dorsey at The deadline to sign up is Sept. 6.

Joe Dutrow. left, reunited recently with some of the EMS crew including Rob Lamoureux, Neil Keilen and Kurt Houghton.
