WALKERSVILLE, MD – “We are truly blessed in Frederick County to have so many dedicated volunteers…”

Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner also told the crowd at the Frederick County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association’s annual recognition ceremony Monday night that their volunteerism and service to their communities “makes Frederick County a special place to call home…” The honorees recognized for their work ranged from a 95-year-old auxiliary member to an 18-year-old rookie.

Gardner lauded the volunteers noting that the majority of the apparatus is owned by individual departments. “You literally save us millions of dollars.” She added that Frederick County should be proud of its effective combination system. Gardner said she is awed by the volunteers’ dedication, commitment and compassion.

FCVFRA President Eric Smothers said unfortunately the county is facing a shortage of volunteers, a national trend. “I understand it’s difficult to recruit and retain people,” he said, adding that the county is fortunate to have Joyce Shry reaching out to citizens explaining the need for volunteers. Smothers noted that it takes a lot of work from many people to get the job done. He said he’s amazed at the efforts and sacrifices folks make on a daily basis. The award winners, he said, are very deserving.

Those honored during the 24th annual ceremony include:
• Clint Hughes Departmental Fire Prevention Award – Junior Fire Co.
• Everett W. Gaver Department/Church/Community Award – Mary Ambrose
• Robert Renner Department Service Award – Alan Hurley
• Winona ‘Winnie” Crum Rookie of Year – Scott VanDermark
• Louise Lenhart Auxiliary Encouragement Award – Michelle Curry
• Charles H. ‘Mutt’ Deater Jr. Apprentice of the Year Award – Shawn Pyles and Joshua Smith

• Mick Mastrino Instructor/Safety Award – Kristi Staley
• Michael Wilcom Officer of the Year – Valaria Kilby
• Heart of Volunteer – Helen Eyler

Three companies were honored for their training efforts: United Steam Fire Co. members each took 87.17 hours of training, while Independent Hose Co. crews each had 87.74 hours and in New Market, volunteers had 104.37 hours.

Several responders were honored for saving a victim rescued from a house fire last summer. County Firefighters Jennifer Wilson and Chad Johns went into the Brunswick house without a hose line, and rescued a woman overcome by smoke. Once outside, Brunswick Vol. Ambulance & Rescue Co. Chief Andy Smothers and EMT Courtney Nalborczyk immediately started treatment on the elderly woman. Firefighter/EMT-P Jonas Zeigler initiated advance life support measures. The victim was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to a trauma center for treatment. Due to the teamwork of all involved, the woman has returned to Brunswick. For their efforts, Smothers and Nalborczyk received the outstanding unit award.

Also Monday night, 10 people were inducted into the FCVFRA Hall of Fame. They include Dorothy Moss, Lorraine Ferrell, Eddie Lapole, Debbie Perkins, Matt Staley, Ronnie Eyler, Betty White, James Goodman, Marty Fuller and Dennis Mathias.
